Theory Test - First Part of ADI Tests

Introduction to First Test

The theory test is the first of three tests you will need to pass before you can register as an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). It is made up of two elements:
  • a set of multiple choice questions
  • a hazard perception test
The theory test calls for a higher standard of knowledge from a learner driver, so you'll need to prepare thoroughly. You will usually be given the results of your theory test before you leave the test centre.

If you achieve an overall pass mark, you'll be given details about how to apply for the next part of the ADI qualifying test: part two - the practical assessment of driving ability. For more information about the test, see our guide on part two of the Approved Driving Instructor test: driving ability.

Whether you pass or fail the theory test, you will be told in which parts you have made errors. However, you will not be given details of individual questions. There is no limit on the number of times you may attempt the theory test.

To be a safe driver with good hazard perception skills, you should be able to:
  • scan the road effectively
  • anticipate and plan for potential hazards
  • use speed correctly
  • keep the correct distance between yourself and other road users

Multiple Choice Element

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) recommends that you read its publication 'The ADI Theory Test Question Bank' to help you study for the multiple choice part of the theory test. You can order 'The ADI Theory test Question Bank' from the DSA ADI Service Line on Tel 0300 123 1126 begin of the skype highlighting 0300 123 1126 end of the skype highlighting.

Hazard Perception Element

To help you prepare for the hazard perception part, the DSA has put together a DVD called 'The Official Guide to Hazard Perception'. This includes modules designed to you and your trainer to use, and to form part of your practical on-road training. The DVD is sold in major retailers and book stores, or you can order it directly from the DSA bookshop on the Stationery Office (TSO) website - Opens in a new window.

You may also find it useful to refer to publications and training aids produced by other organizations. The DSA recommends that you prepare for the theory test with a professional instructor, as part of a structured Programme of in-car tuition.

On The Day of The Test

When you attend your theory test, you must bring along your valid GB or Northern Ireland driving license. If you have a photo card-style license, you must bring both parts of the license - photo card and paper counterpart - to the test. If your license does not have your photograph on it, you will also need to bring along a current passport.

Special Requirements For The Approved Driving Instructor Theory Test

If you have special requirements when taking your Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) theory test, you should mention these when booking your test so that the test centre can make the necessary arrangements. If you have dyslexia or reading difficulties, a headset with an English language voiceover will be provided. You can also ask for additional time to take the multiple choice part of the test.

You will need to provide a letter from a teacher or educationalist, a psychologist or a doctor - if appropriate - as evidence of this requirement. If it isn't possible to get this information from a relevant professional, the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) will consider a letter from an independent person who knows about your reading ability - e.g. an employer.
